Southern Europe swelters under intense heatwave – new developments

Many regions in Europe are experiencing intense heat today, with temperatures reaching the mid-to-high 30s and even low 40s Celsius. Health and environmental warnings remain in effect, especially in southern parts of the continent.

Countries such as France, Italy, Portugal, and Spain have faced extreme conditions over the weekend, with similar weather expected today.

A glance at forecasts shows high temperatures in several cities: Rome, Madrid, and Bologna (36°C), Athens and Naples (35°C), Lisbon (34°C), Zagreb (33°C), Paris (32°C), and London (31°C). Some areas, like Spain’s Extremadura region, may even reach the low 40s.

In Italy, 27 cities were under high health alerts on Sunday. Meanwhile, France has placed 84 of its 96 mainland departments on its second-highest heat warning, according to reports.

"This is unprecedented," said Agner Pannier-Runacher, France’s ecology transition minister.

Further updates will follow as the situation develops.
