Tadej Pogacar Nears Fourth Tour de France Victory
Tadej Pogacar holds a lead of more than four minutes heading into the final stage to Paris, needing only an incident-free ride to secure his fourth Tour title. The Slovenian entered the race as the clear favorite and has dominated throughout. Despite Jonas Vingegaard's relentless efforts, Pogacar has maintained his advantage. Though his triumph seems almost certain, Pogacar remains cautious. "Anything can happen, but I'm not promising I’ll go for it," he said after Saturday’s penultimate stage. "We’ll try to enjoy the yellow jersey in Paris." Speculation persists that Pogacar may still attempt an attack today—only time will tell.
Vingegaard sits in second place (+4:24), with Florian Lipowitz third (+11:90), narrowly ahead of Scotland’s Oscar Onley, who just misses the podium. The 22-year-old’s ride has been impressive, hinting at a promising future.
Rain, cobbles, and the Côte de la Butte Montmartre make this final stage one of the more challenging in recent years, even with the traditional champagne celebration. Wet conditions could complicate the finish in Paris, as Tour racing director Thierry Gouvenou noted. "Even slight rain turns Paris into an ice rink," he said before the event. "We saw it during the Olympic time trial—it can quickly become disastrous."
Despite discussions about neutralizing the stage, Paris appears dry for now. If rain does fall, the overall standings may be locked to prevent crashes from altering the final classification. "The stage will proceed, but times could be frozen," Gouvenou explained. As always, riders must simply avoid mishaps to preserve their positions.
