A shooting occurred at a private nursing home in Daruvar, north-east Croatia, resulting in at least six fatalities, including an apparent family member of the assailant. The suspect is believed to have entered the facility with unregistered firearms and engaged in gunfire before fleeing, subsequently being apprehended elsewhere.
The incident was reportedly carried out by a man with prior incidents involving public disturbance and domestic violence. The nursing home housed around 20 residents at the time of the attack.
Local authorities received notification about the shooting at approximately 10:10 am local time, confirming that the assailant used a firearm during the incident. Reports indicate the suspect may have been a retired military police officer from Croatia's past conflicts.
The town of Daruvar, known for its spa facilities and thermal springs, expressed shock at this unfortunate event as it occurred in their community. President Zoran Milanović described the incident as "terrifying," urging increased measures to prevent such violence within society.
This occurrence marks a rare instance of gun-related violence in Croatia since gaining independence from Yugoslavia, making it one of the most significant events post-1991.
