Three Killed as Lisbon’s Gloria Funicular Derails, Dozens Injured
At least three people have died after Lisbon’s historic Gloria funicular derailed and crashed, injuring around 20 others, officials confirmed.
Three individuals remain in critical condition.
Images from the scene showed the tram-style railcar, used to transport passengers up and down a steep slope in the city, badly damaged, with rescue teams working to free people trapped in the wreckage.
President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa expressed sorrow over the tragedy, stating that investigators would work to determine the cause of the accident.
The rail line, inaugurated in 1885, links Lisbon’s central district near Restauradores Square to the Bairro Alto, known for its lively evening scene.
Operated by the city’s public transport service, the funicular consists of two cars connected to opposite ends of a haulage cable, powered by electric motors on both carriages.
