Tommy Freeman has raised concerns over his availability for the British & Irish Lions ahead of their third Test against Australia. The 24-year-old, who started the first two matches, missed the final training session on Friday due to a back issue. The Lions are aiming for their first outright series victory without a loss since 1974 and a complete sweep since 1927.
On Friday, the Lions maintained that Freeman would be ready for the Sydney encounter, stating his absence was part of managing his workload. However, alternative plans have reportedly been prepared, possibly involving Huw Jones shifting to the wing and Owen Farrell joining the starting lineup.
If fully recovered, Mack Hansen could be an option, though he missed the opening two Tests with a foot injury and was described as "85%" fit earlier in the week. Other alternatives include Duhan van der Merwe and James Lowe, with Blair Kinghorn potentially moving from the left to the right wing. Jamie Osborne may also be considered.
Freeman has played 33 matches this season, exceeding the Rugby Football Union’s 30-game limit.
"He was just taking part in lighter drills," said assistant coach John Dalziel. "Wingers cover a lot of high-intensity running, so he was rested this morning. He’ll see the stadium tomorrow when it’s full."
"There’s no easy role for a winger when constantly chasing kicks and high balls, as we’ve seen in the first two Tests—it adds up quickly in terms of distance covered."
