Hurricane Beryl slammed into Jamaica after causing widespread devastation in Grenada and St Vincent and the Grenadines (SVG). At least seven lives were lost across these regions, as the category 4 storm battered southern coasts with wind speeds of over 140mph.
Residents like Amoy Wellington, a cashier from Jamaica's St. Elizabeth parish, described their dire circumstances: "It’s terrible. Everything’s gone. I’m in my house and scared." Prime Minister Andrew Holness warned that the storm hadn't reached its peak yet and called upon people living in high-risk areas to move.
The National Hurricane Center (NHC) predicted life-threatening flash floods, mudslides due to heavy rainfall across Jamaica and southern Haiti through Wednesday. The Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management in Jamaica warned people about potential dangerous storm surges that could raise water levels up to 2.75 meters high (9ft).
Beryl also led to casualties across the Caribbean: three deaths were reported in Venezuela, Grenada, and St Vincent and the Grenadines. The US National Hurricane Center Director Michael Brennan expressed concern over Jamaica being directly hit by the storm's core of a major hurricane, urging locals to find safe shelters before nightfall on Tuesday.
The disaster prompted countries in South America and Caribbean to mobilize relief efforts amidst grim scenes of destruction in Grenada and St Vincent and the Grenadines – regions severely impacted by the hurricane's fury.
