Many spectators hoping to watch the opening tee shots at Bethpage Black were unable to do so due to heightened security protocols before the arrival of a notable guest.
The high-profile figure was present near and briefly on the 1st tee as the afternoon fourball session began. By then, organizers had been relieved that earlier logistical issues had been resolved. Tee times could not be adjusted for delays because of the tightly scheduled event. Attendees, who had paid $750 for standard admission, had been advised to arrive early but still faced significant delays.
Long lines were visible from early morning near the main entrance as crowds gathered to witness the start of the much-awaited competition.
Event staff expressed frustration after being stuck in the same lengthy lines as the public. Enhanced security checkpoints near the 1st hole prompted organizers to open gates at 5 a.m., more than two hours before play began, but delays persisted as the event started.
Transportation difficulties also caused some spectators to leave shuttle buses and walk through nearby neighborhoods to reach the venue. One attendee shared a video of a power line malfunctioning close to the course. No injuries were reported, but it highlighted the morning’s disorder.
The prominent visitor, accompanied by a family member, arrived mid-morning and was driven to the clubhouse. Security personnel were stationed throughout, including on the roof, as part of extensive precautionary measures.
This was the first instance of such a high-ranking official attending the event. Several players, including Europe’s Rory McIlroy, greeted the visitor before heading to the 1st tee. They had been advised to skip the morning session as organizers anticipated potential disruptions.
