U.S. ice‑hockey standout Hilary Knight took a jab at Donald Trump during her appearance on Saturday Night Live over the weekend.
Knight helped the U.S. women secure the Olympic gold medal last month, netting the opening goal in the overtime victory over Canada. After the U.S. men’s squad clinched their gold, Trump quipped that he would have to invite the women’s team to the White House as well, or face impeachment. Several of the male players laughed at the remark, and Knight later described the reaction as “distasteful and unfortunate.” While the men’s team visited the White House last week, Knight and her teammates said they were occupied and will instead mark the achievement at a July gathering organized by rapper Flavor Flav.
Knight was joined on SNL by teammate Megan Keller, who scored the overtime winner, and brothers Jack and Quinn Hughes of the men’s team. The episode was hosted by Connor Storrie of Heated Rivalry.
All four athletes wore their Olympic medals, and Knight referenced Trump’s joke: “It was supposed to be just us, but we thought we’d bring the guys in too.” Keller added, “We wanted to give them a little chance to shine.”
Several members of the men’s roster have since voiced remorse for laughing at Trump’s comment, with Boston Bruins defenseman Charlie McAvoy saying he is “certainly sorry for how we responded in that moment.”
Knight got the final laugh on SNL. When Quinn Hughes noted that the men’s gold was their first since 1980, Knight replied, “The last time we did that was two whole Olympics ago.” Jack Hughes grinned and said, “Nice burn.”
The medal marked Knight’s last Olympic appearance. After the win, Keller praised Knight’s leadership.
“She’s the heart of our group,” Keller said of the captain. “We wouldn’t be here without her. I can’t say enough good things about her, and to end her Olympic career this way—just thrilled for her.”
