"Ukraine summons US envoy as Washington minimizes paused arms delivery impact"

US Pauses Some Weapons Deliveries to Ukraine, Prompting Concern in Kyiv

Washington's move to suspend certain critical arms shipments to Ukraine sparked warnings from Kyiv on Wednesday, with officials saying the decision could weaken Ukraine's defenses against escalating airstrikes and ground advances. Ukraine stated that it had summoned the acting US ambassador to stress the importance of continued military assistance and cautioned that any reduction in support would strengthen Russia’s resolve in the war.

According to four sources familiar with the matter, the Pentagon's halt—linked to concerns over dwindling US military stockpiles—began recently and includes 30 Patriot air defense missiles, vital for intercepting ballistic missiles, as well as nearly 8,500 155mm artillery shells, over 250 precision-guided rocket artillery munitions, and 142 air-to-surface missiles.

Kyiv’s foreign ministry stressed that “any delays in military aid would only embolden the aggressor to prolong the war rather than pursue peace.” Ukraine’s defense ministry stated it had not received official notification of the suspension and was seeking clarification from Washington. A Ukrainian source described the decision as a "total shock."

US officials sought to downplay the development, asserting that President Donald Trump retains “substantial” options for supporting Kyiv militarily. A Pentagon spokesperson said, “The Defense Department continues to offer the president strong alternatives for aiding Ukraine, in line with his objective of ending this tragic conflict. Efforts are ongoing to refine strategies while maintaining US military readiness.”

A State Department spokesperson added, “This does not signify an end to US assistance. It is a single instance, and future discussions will determine further steps.”

In a separate development, an Estonian court ruled on Wednesday that Russian intelligence had orchestrated an arson attack on a restaurant and supermarket in Estonia last year. Western officials have linked similar incidents across Europe to Moscow, alleging attempts to destabilize support for Ukraine and create discord. Two Moldovan nationals, identified as cousins Ivan Chihaial, carried out the attack.

Meanwhile, a Ukrainian military official reported Russian advances near two strategic eastern towns—Pokrovsk and Kostiantynivka—critical for supply lines. Despite heavy losses, Moscow has concentrated forces in rural areas around these locations, seeking progress in its ongoing offensive.
