"UN warns of immediate starvation crisis in Gaza amid Middle East turmoil"

Gaza Faces Severe Food Shortages, UN Official Reports

We resume our ongoing reporting on the conflict in Gaza. Cindy McCain, head of the UN World Food Programme, stated that the lack of food in Gaza is "very evident," with clear signs of starvation in the region.

Her remarks were shared with the Associated Press during a recent visit to Gaza and follow last week’s warning from the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification about the worsening food crisis.

“I spoke directly with mothers and children suffering from hunger,” McCain said. “The situation is dire and unfolding right now.”

McCain mentioned she discussed the issue with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who reportedly expressed concern. Netanyahu has previously rejected claims of famine in Gaza, calling them misinformation spread by Hamas and amplified by news outlets.

“We agreed that urgent action is needed to increase assistance. Safe and unimpeded aid delivery is essential,” McCain added.

The current government, led by Netanyahu, has restricted aid into Gaza, contributing to the shortages. Aid organizations report continual challenges in delivering supplies to those in need.

For much of March and April, Gaza was cut off from food shipments entirely. Israel defended the blockade as a strategy to pressure Hamas into releasing captives, though critics have called it collective punishment against civilians.

Under mounting global criticism over the hunger crisis, Netanyahu announced in mid-May that aid deliveries would resume. However, the supplies reaching Gaza remain insufficient, and many Palestinians have lost their lives while attempting to access aid.
