A youth was reported to authorities after allegedly trespassing on Florence's Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore late at night and ascending the Cupola Brunelleschi to capture a selfie.
Donning casual attire, an individual documented their ascent through a stairwell within this protected monument before proceeding upwards and standing on a platform nearby for the photo opportunity.
This unauthorized activity was captured in images shared on a social media account with substantial followings. It is speculated that he gained entry prior to closure of the cathedral. Another person recorded the incident from an external vantage point, apparently observing the youth's departure.
The young man has not been identified, but Italian news sources suggest his age and previous antics involving similar selfie stunts. His last reported act was at Milan Cathedral in May, which led to legal consequences for him.
Luca Bagnoli, the director of Florence's cathedral, confirmed a report filed with law enforcement.
"We have been notified about an unauthorized entry into Brunelleschi’s dome," stated Bagnoli in response to media inquiry. "The Cathedral of Florence is both sacred and historically significant. Sadly, for some individuals, it has become a site for such actions. The authorities will ensure appropriate measures are taken."
Previous incidents have also involved the youth recording stunts at Milan's San Siro stadium roof and Ariston Theatre during Sanremo Festival events.
Vice-President Fabiola Minoletti of a Milan community group, speaking to another local newspaper, remarked: "This individual continues with these reckless actions. How can society manage such attitudes? The dangers not only lie in the personal risk but could also inspire others."
In response, a follower of the youth has issued a challenge for him to reach St Peter's Basilica at the Vatican.
