United Nations Food Agency Halts Activities in Gaza Following Violent Incident Involving Checkpoint Firearms

The United Nations food agency announced a halt on staff movement within Gaza "until further notice" following an incident where one of its vehicles was struck by gunfire at an Israeli military checkpoint, as reported today. Cindy McCain, the World Food Programme's head, condemned Tuesday’s occurrence: “This act is completely unacceptable and represents another in a series of unnecessary security incidents that have put WFP personnel in Gaza at risk.”

“The current procedure for coordination with military forces appears to be failing,” McCain added. She highlighted the incident, wherein their vehicle was fired upon despite having obtained necessary clearances after concluding an assignment near the border of Southern Gaza and Israel Defense Forces (IDF) checkpoint at Wadi Gaza Bridge: “This is not our first encounter with security issues during this conflict; however, it’s alarming to see a UN humanitarian vehicle being directly targeted.”

The incident involved their white truck showing signs of bullet damage. The World Food Programme expressed its concern stating they had been just meters away from the IDF checkpoint when struck: “While not unprecedented, this is an alarming escalation in hostilities towards our humanitarian efforts,” according to a statement released by them today.

In response to their remarks UN Secretary General spokesperson Stephane Dujarric emphasized that the vehicle was markedly identifiable as part of sanctioned convoy, and despite all precautions taken for coordination with IDF were targetted: “We have no way to understand who's behind these attacks,” he added.

This recent incident follows previous occurrences such as an Indian UN staff member fatality in May caused by what the United Nations described as tank fire on Palestinian ground, underlining a rising trend of violence against their operations there.

As World Health Organization embarks upon plans to immunize around half-million children in Gaza (an effort for curbing Type II Poliovirus), they are doing so amidst an ongoing conflict which commenced three months ago when Hamas forces breached Israeli communities, leading upwards of a thousand casualties and the abduction of approximately two hundred individuals.

In its aftermath Israel's armed response has caused massive destruction throughout Palestinian land resulting in nearly 2.3 million people being displaced: The United Nations maintains that aid delivery to Gaza faces significant hurdles, asserting an atmosphere characterized by complete lawlessness within the territory today (referred here for contextual continuity).
