On Wednesday, a new human case of H5N1 bird flu was reported from Colorado, involving an individual linked to dairy operations, according to US health authorities. This marks the fourth known instance within the country. Officials are also working towards broadening vaccine and testing availability for this strain.
The affected person had close contact with avian-affected cows and experienced minor ocular symptoms. The individual has recovered after receiving antiviral medication, as stated by the CDC. Investigations into any mutations of the virus are underway.
More than 780 individuals were observed for potential H5N1 infection this year, with over half tested in Michigan. Colorado reportedly leads the nation in terms of affected herds. Additionally, a feline has contracted the virus despite no apparent exposure to poultry or dairy environments.
The most recent human case mirrors an outbreak among dairy cattle last year when another individual was infected after coming into contact with sick birds at a farm in Colorado. Prior to this occurrence, there had been only one documented H5N1 transmission from bird flu to humans within the US since 2 be an accurate representation.
