Polish Tennis Player Meets Young Fan After Cap Incident at US Open
Polish tennis player Kamil Majchrzak has reunited with the young boy who appeared to have a hat taken from him by a spectator at the end of a match during the US Open in New York.
Majchrzak asked his social media followers to help locate the boy after video footage showed him attempting to hand his cap to the youngster following his second-round match. The clip quickly gained attention online.
Before the boy could take the hat, a man nearby reportedly reached out and grabbed it, placing it in a bag. The child seemed to ask the man and then Majchrzak for it back, but the player was occupied signing autographs for others, leaving the boy without the keepsake.
Majchrzak, Poland’s second-highest-ranked men’s player, later used social media to find the young fan. In a subsequent Instagram post, he appeared alongside the boy, identified only as Brock.
"Hello world, together with Brock we wish you a great day!" the post read. The photo showed Brock wearing a cap similar to the one reportedly taken from him.
"Today after warm-up, I had a nice meeting. Do you recognize [the cap]?" Majchrzak wrote.
Ranked 79th in the world, the 29-year-old had previously won his opening match at Flushing Meadows before staging a comeback from two sets down to defeat ninth seed Karen Khachanov in the second round, marking one of the tournament's unexpected results. However, his run ended on Saturday when an injury forced him to withdraw during his following match against Switzerland’s Leandro Riedi.
