Venezuela: Concerns Over Election Fairness Heighten Amid Arrest of Opposition Security Leader

Less than two weeks before Venezuela’s presidential election, security chief Milciades Ávila associated with opposition leader María Corina Machado was arrested, escalating concerns that the upcoming July 28th vote may not be conducted fairly as Nicolás Maduro seeks a third term in office.

Machado publicly addressed her concern on social media, highlighting the detainment of Ávila, a long-standing protector and confidant who has been part of her security team for ten years. She alleges that he was abducted by authorities under false accusations related to an incident at a restaurant in La Encrucijada, where she, Edmundo González, and their supporters were present.

Machado emphasized the gravity of this arrest with reference to multiple testimonies and evidence suggesting premeditated actions taken against them just days before the election. According to Venezuelan non-governmental organization Foro Penal, authorities have already arrested 102 individuals affiliated with Edmundo González's campaign in a concerted effort that the group's vice-president believes reflects an intentional strategy of repression against those supporting María Corina Machado and Edmundo González.
