Max Verstappen Secures Pole Position at Italian Grand Prix
Max Verstappen took pole position for the Italian Grand Prix at Monza, outpacing the McLaren duo of Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, who finished second and third. The session was fiercely contested under clear skies at the high-speed circuit, the fastest on the F1 calendar.
Charles Leclerc claimed fourth for Ferrari, with teammate Carlos Sainz in fifth. However, Sainz will drop to 10th on the grid due to a five-place penalty from the Dutch Grand Prix.
The battle at the front was extremely tight, with Ferrari showing strong pace at their home race. The lead shifted between drivers before Verstappen ultimately secured pole by a margin of just 0.07 seconds—a standout performance in a car that has typically struggled to match the McLarens this season.
Verstappen’s lap not only set a new track record but also became the fastest in F1 history, averaging over 160 mph. This marked his 45th career pole, a record for any driver with Red Bull.
The achievement was particularly impressive given the team’s previous difficulties at Monza, though Verstappen had secured victories here in 2022 and 2023 when Red Bull was more competitive.
His fifth pole this season offers a positive foundation as the team adjusts following the departure of former team principal Christian Horner and the arrival of Laurent Mekies. This was Mekies’ first pole as team principal.
Before the summer break, Verstappen ended speculation about his future by confirming he would remain with the team next year, though he stopped short of committing to his contract until 2028.
As the track improved with each lap, timing became crucial. Red Bull executed Verstappen’s runs with precision, allowing him to capitalize on the conditions.
