A recent outbreak of fatal clashes in Papua New Guinea has led to the loss of at least 26 lives, with 16 children among them, as reported by a UN representative. The violence occurred over two days in July on three villages within East Sepik province and resulted in numerous residents fleeing their homes due to arson attacks.
The United Nations high commissioner for human rights expressed deep concern regarding these events that appear to have stemmed from land and water resource disagreements. UN High Commissioner Volker Türk issued a statement on Wednesday, urging the Papua New Guinea authorities to promptly investigate impartially and transparently while ensuring those responsible face justice.
Türk also emphasized the necessity for victim support, including housing, protection measures against future violence, and psychological aid. In addition, he called on officials to collaborate with impacted communities in addressing underlying issues leading to such disputes. This stance follows a similar appeal made by Türk's office earlier this year amidst rising tribal hostilities since the 2022 elections over land and clan differences.
The historical conflict between various tribes, exacerbated now with access to advanced weaponry, has intensified due to the country’s population growth, which increased by more than two-fold since 1980, putting pressure on limited resources and deepening rivalries among communities.
