Virgin has revealed a prototype of its future cross-Channel train, promising to offer a fresh and innovative experience. The company plans to introduce rail services from London to the continent by 2030, marking the first competition for Eurostar since the Channel Tunnel's inception.
Virgin has commissioned 12 trains from manufacturer Alstom, aiming to surpass Eurostar in both design and customer experience. The inspiration for these trains comes from Virgin's airline, cruise, and hotel divisions. While specific details remain confidential, Virgin indicates it will incorporate elements from Virgin Atlantic’s airport lounges for social spaces that offer flexibility for working, relaxing, or socializing. The dining experience will draw from its cruise line menus, and the overall design will be influenced by Virgin Hotels.
Josh Bayliss, chief executive of Virgin Group, emphasized the company's extensive experience in travel and hospitality, spanning over four decades. He expressed confidence that the new service will increase the number of train journeys between the UK and Europe, adding capacity for millions of international rail journeys annually and contributing to market growth. Bayliss anticipates the distinctive red and black trains traveling across Europe.
Virgin also aims to integrate its rail and airline networks, potentially facilitating passenger transfers from France for Virgin Atlantic flights. The Office of Rail and Road confirmed an agreement with Eurostar for Virgin to maintain its trains at the Temple Mills international depot in east London, with UK track access secured until at least 2040.
Meanwhile, Italy's state-owned Trenitalia is expected to launch its own cross-Channel high-speed services. It currently operates international trains to Paris and has recently placed an order for 19 new trains from Hitachi, some of which will be based in France and travel through the tunnel to London.
