War Crime Claims as Experts Declare Near-Impossible Recovery for Abducted Ukrainians by Russians

Numerous Ukrainian youngsters are still missing and believed to be detained within Russia or Russian-controlled areas. An American expert group has shed light on this issue, with relatives stating they resort to extreme actions in their bid for these kids' safe return home.

During February 2022 when invaders crossed the border into Ukraine, numerous children were snatched from care institutions and battlefield casualties after parents lost their lives. Some youngsters even faced coercion straight out of family units to join this distressing scenario directly under Russian influence or occupation zones.

Russia has dismissively refused calls for these kids' return, with a representative accusing Ukraine during peace negotiations in Turkey that very month of fabricating an issue around lost children as leverage points on the table.

To share her harrowing personal tale about rescuing her two adolescent sons who were kept captive at a Russian camp for almost half a year. After invaders took over Natalia's home city of Kherson near Ukraine’s eastern border in September 2022, an acquaintance suggested that she send the boys to a children's facility located on Russia territory - specifically Anapa, along its Black Sea coastline township.

"The supposedly free trip spanned around three weeks and was meant for them returning back home," Natalia recalled how it turned out being misleading as an error of her judgment that allowed the boys to get involved with this ill-fated journey which ultimately led into a grave mistake on my part."

Post liberation by Ukrainian forces in late December, she discovered one way or another there were no opportunities for them return when they ended up stranded at an outpost across her city border. "The facility's administration refused to let the boys go back without me being physically present," Natalia expressed frustration about that time.

Eventually, through assistance from a Ukrainian group committed in finding these misplaced children, she managed getting identification papers for both of them and made an arduous solo venture across borders into Anapa with hopes to reunite her boys soon afterward which happened finally when they were brought back together at home.

"To this day I still cannot fathom their emotional impact on me as those are my only existence," Natalia expressed the depth of connection she shares with these children, for whom nothing else matters but them being safe and sound again beside her." Up till now just a tiny fraction - around 1360 according to figures from this very same group that had been looking actively after their kids.

In an analysis carried out by Yale University's Humanitarian Research Lab, they estimated as many upwards of approximately half-a-million Ukrainian youth might be under Russian or its occupied territories domination currently based on the extensive research conducted into various official documents and satellite imagery along with connections among families.

Nathaniel Raymond who leads this initiative emphasized: "Considering what's happening now, we believe it to potentially surpass any child abduction crisis since World War II in terms of scale – reminiscent likewise experiences such as those faced during the Germanization era."
