Ryan Garcia was stripped of WBC recognition following Thursday's incident, wherein he utilized offensive language towards individuals based on race and faith during a live social media broadcast.
Mauricio Sulaiman, the head of WBC, stated firmly in an X message that any form of discrimination is unacceptable under their purview. "My actions today...garner Ryan Garcia from all association with our organization," he declared.
In a subsequent post on social media, Garcia expressed regret: “I was just messing around. I’m sorry if my words caused any harm,” he wrote in an attempt at clarification.
Earlier this year, the New York State Athletic Commission suspended Garcia for one year and declared his April victory against Devin Haney null due to a positive doping test. Prior to their match-up, there were concerns regarding Garcia's unpredictable behavior both offline and online, with troubling expressions of conspiimation theories and appeals for assistance. He later countered these suspicions after the fight by stating his genuine mental stability.
In June, Garcia was detained following accusations of financial misconduct amounting to $15,000 at a luxury hotel in Beverly Hills. His legal representative acknowledged this difficult period for Garcia and attributed it to distressing news about his mother's health situation.
In response to the controversy surrounding Garcia's comments, his family issued a statement dissociating from the remarks on race and religion made by him, emphasizing their belief that these views are not representative of who he truly is, as supported by those close to him. The family highlighted their commitment towards supporting Garcia through his struggles with mental health and ensuring he receives appropriate assistance during this challenging time for both immediate and long-term recovery.
