Tropical Storm Beryl, having made its mark as the earliest recorded category 5 hurricane on record, progressed towards Texas' coastline and landed on Monday. After weakening into a tropical storm over Mexico's Yucatan peninsula, it was projected to gain strength in favorable conditions.
According to the National Hurricane Center, Beryl's peak intensification would happen just prior to its arrival onshore and continue moving northward as it transitions into a post-tropical storm. For it to be re-classified as a hurricane, wind speeds of 74-95 mph should occur; some forecasts suggest gusts could reach upwards of 120mph near the coastline.
The populace must prepare for more than just high winds: torrential rains and floods are anticipated, as well as potential tornadoes east of Beryl's path. A coastal surge warning has been issued along Texas' shores, including sections in Louisiana. The expected storm surge may reach six feet (1.8 meters) above sea level, exacerbated by high tide and potentially affecting areas such as Galveston Bay.
The possibility of flash flooding is also a concern on Monday and Tuesday, with meteorologists predicting up to 200mm of rain over just one day across eastern Texas—a quantity far exceeding the typical July rainfall in that region. This downpour could impact life and infrastructure from Corpus Christi on the southern coast to beyond Oklahoma's border.
Meanwhile, a surge in temperature is anticipated for southeastern Europe later this week. Romania, Serbia, and Hungary are predicted to experience scorching temperatures up to 40C (104F), near their respective monthly high averages. Nighttime lows are expected to be in the upper 20s Celsius. This heat wave is forecast to last until the weekend before returning closer to normal by Tuesday, July 16th.
