Lorena Wiebes Triumphs on Stage Three of Tour de France Femmes
Lorena Wiebes, recognized as one of the top sprinters in women’s cycling, delivered a powerful performance on the third stage of the Tour de France Femmes, surging ahead in the final stretch to edge out Marianne Vos at the finish line in Angers.
The closing kilometers were marked by chaos after a significant crash on a narrow turn involved multiple riders. Demi Vollering, the 2023 Tour winner and a leading contender this year, fell heavily but was aided by her FDJ-Suez teammates before continuing to the finish to remain in the race. Elisa Balsamo also appeared injured, though no riders lost time in the overall standings, as the incident occurred within the final five kilometers.
Wiebes had narrowly missed a sprint victory on Sunday after Mavi García’s tactical breakaway. However, on Monday, the European champion timed her move perfectly, accelerating past her rivals in the closing meters and finishing too strongly for Vos to match.
Vos took second place but regained the yellow jersey after briefly losing it to Kim Le Court following stage two. “It was very fast and chaotic,” Vos said of the finale. “Everyone was fighting for position, and there was a big crash behind me near the river. I hope everyone is okay.”
The 163.5km route from La Gacilly to Angers left Vos six seconds ahead of Le Court in the overall standings. Pauline Ferrand-Prevot finished third, 12 seconds back, with last year’s winner, Katarzyna Niewiadoma, in fourth. Vollering stayed fifth but faces a tight recovery period before Tuesday’s fourth stage from Saumur to Poitiers.
