"Wolff affirms Mercedes eyeing another F1 move targeting Red Bull's top driver, Verstappen"

Toto Wolff has confirmed Mercedes are once again considering a move to attract Max Verstappen, with an open position potentially available at the team from next season as George Russell is yet to secure his contract renewal until after the Hungarian Grand Prix.

Russell disclosed on Thursday that discussions between him and Mercedes had been progressing regarding interest in Verstappen; he stated: “It’s only normal for conversations with someone like Verstappen to be happening.” Wolff subsequently addressed a flurry of related queries from the press during the Austrian Grand Prix, ultimately acknowledging that talks were indeed ongoing.

“As Mercedes team principal responsible for leading our top car brand globally,” he began, “it’s clear you're exploring what an accomplished four-time world champion like Verstappen may decide about his future.”

Verstappen currently has a contract with Red Bull until 2028 but is understood to have certain exit options if performance isn't maintained and they find themselves outside the top tier by summer, following after the Hungarian Grand Prix. He stands third at present.

Wolff had been openly pursuing Verstappen up till midway through last season when said driver committed himself to staying with Red Bull while Mercedes signed a new multi-year deal for Kimi Antonelli. In Austria, Wolff reiterated his commitment towards transparency within the team; he explained: “We aimed at being transparent about negotiations rather than keeping them concealed.”

“I’m simply stating facts without sugarcoating,” continued Wolff when asked if they were going to sign Max. "There's no truth in that statement—it just isn’t practical for us yet." He stressed the necessity of openness, citing their practice over two decades with this approach and highlighted how drivers often talk among themselves about such possibilities.

When asked specifically if he was denying ongoing talks between himself as Wolff and Verstappen regarding his future plans, Max stated: “I don’t think there's a need for us to discuss that,” refusing further comment with the same assertion from previous years when faced by similar queries.

Last year at this race point in time, he confirmed an unwavering decision to remain committed towards Red Bull despite Wolff and Mercedes advancements on their end of things. He did not deny that conversations were occurring but chose instead to repeat his previous statements about the situation remaining as is—that there’s no immediate intent from his side at this juncture, even when considering potential changes in plans due to various circumstances like upgrades or team dynamics which may come into play.

The Red Bull circuit has been updated and brought by Mercedes with hopes of enhancing performance outcomes for all involved—not just Verstappen as he competes within his current contract period, but also other drivers such as McLaren's Lando Norris who excelled in the second practice session at Spielberg.

Norris was not exempt from intense self-assessment following a disappointing incident involving Oscar Piastri during qualifying—an event which naturally raises questions about his future within team dynamics and potential impact on championship aspirations, given these types of scenarios often have far reaching consequences beyond immediate performance outcomes.
