Europe Must Recognize Russia’s Threat, Says NATO’s Rutte
NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte spoke at the IISS Prague Defence Summit, emphasizing the need for Europe to strengthen its military capabilities in response to growing global threats.
Rutte noted that Russia and China are rapidly expanding and modernizing their armed forces. "Their advancements are happening at a staggering rate," he said. He pointed out that this equipment is already being used against Ukraine, stressing that while efforts to end the conflict continue, Europe should not underestimate future risks.
"This trend will not change in the near future," Rutte warned. "Russia will remain a destabilizing and confrontational force in Europe and beyond for the foreseeable future."
Paris Talks on Ukraine Security Guarantees Begin
Jakub Krupa
A group of European leaders, along with Ukraine’s Volodymyr Zelenskyy, gathered in Paris and online today to discuss potential security guarantees for Ukraine in the event of a peace agreement with Russia.
Hosted by French President Emmanuel Macron, the meeting aims to translate political support into specific measures that would ensure Ukraine’s security if a deal is reached. Macron stated that after months of planning, Europe is prepared to formalize these commitments during the discussions.
The leaders began talks in the morning, followed by a call with U.S. President Donald Trump in the afternoon. The outcome of their discussions is expected to be announced shortly afterward.
Trump mentioned last night that he had considered arranging direct talks between Zelenskyy and Russian President Vladimir Putin but provided no concrete details. "Something will happen, but they’re not ready yet," he told CBS. Earlier, he said Putin would have to decide on the next steps, adding, "If we are unhappy about it, you will see things happen."
