"Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant loses power amid UN warning of 'extremely precarious' safety"

Power Lines Restored at Ukraine’s Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Plant After Hours-Long Outage

The Russian-occupied Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant in Ukraine lost all external electricity for several hours on Friday before power was restored, according to the UN nuclear watchdog. Rafael Grossi, head of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), confirmed the return of electricity after 3½ hours but warned that nuclear safety in Ukraine "remains extremely fragile." Ukrainian officials attributed the power cut to Russian shelling, which damaged the last remaining power line serving the facility. Technicians from Ukraine’s energy grid worked to repair the connection. The plant, Europe’s largest, was temporarily powered by diesel generators during the outage. Though inactive, it requires electricity to maintain cooling systems for its nuclear fuel.

Kyiv Hit by Major Russian Air Attack Following Putin-Trump Call

Ukraine has accused Russian forces of launching a massive drone and missile strike on Kyiv shortly after a phone conversation between Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy condemned the seven-hour assault as a "deliberate act of terror" and suggested it revealed Moscow’s approach to diplomacy. The attack, one of the largest of the war, involved over 550 drones and ballistic missiles, killing one person and injuring at least 23.

Zelenskyy highlighted the effectiveness of Ukrainian interceptor drones in countering the assault and emphasized the need for expanded production and operator training. "We are scaling this up as much as possible," he stated in an evening address.

Trump spoke with Zelenskyy after the attack, amid growing uncertainty over the U.S. role in ending the conflict. The call occurred as Washington paused its latest military aid shipment. Zelenskyy described the discussion as "important and useful," covering air defence, joint weapons production, and economic cooperation. Trump, however, expressed frustration over his earlier call with Putin, suggesting the Russian leader was uninterested in halting hostilities. When asked about providing Ukraine with additional Patriot missiles, Trump acknowledged the need for defence support without confirming further assistance.
