Zelensky claims Viktor Orban has turned his back on European unity during UK summit

Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelenskiy challenges Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán during European Political Community summit at Blenheim Palace, accusing him of undermining European unity in response to his recent Moscow visit with Putin.

Addressing a room full of European leaders and defense ministers, Zelenskiy emphasized the importance of maintaining solidarity among Europeans as they face external pressures from Russia. He warned against any potential division that could be exploited by adversaries to betray shared interests and harm Ukraine or other nations.

Zelenskiy specifically addressed Orbán's recent trip to Moscow, suggesting a cautionary stance among European leaders regarding unilateral actions behind their backs. He underscored the ability of the EU to address issues collaboratively without relying on any single individual whose decisions may not align with the collective interests of the continent.

Orbán's previous objections had already tested Europe’s unity, including his prolonged delay over a €50bn aid package for Kyiv and subsequent negotiations seeking additional concessions from Ukraine. His visit to Moscow, accompanied by Putin, where they discussed territorial demands on Ukraine, further fueled concerns about the Hungarian leader's commitment to European solidarity.

The Ukrainian president also called for increased support in terms of air defense equipment and urged against restricting its use, a point he highlighted with reference to the UK’s provision of Storm Shadow missiles but refusal to authorize their use on Russian soil by Ukraine.
