Zelenskyy meets key allies in London to urge scaling up of air defences

Volodymyr Zelenskyy met with the leaders of the UK, France, and Germany in London on Sunday evening to discuss the critical necessity of enhancing Ukraine’s air defenses and deep-strike capacities. According to Downing Street, the discussions occurred following Russia's use of hypersonic weapons.

The gathering took place shortly after a Russian drone attack damaged a spent nuclear fuel storage site located nine miles from the Chornobyl nuclear power plant. Keir Starmer hosted Zelenskyy, Emmanuel Macron, and Friedrich Merz to coordinate ongoing assistance as Ukraine leverages recent strikes against Russian positions. A government spokesperson noted that the leaders focused on increasing interceptor production and the joint development of anti-ballistic missile and deep-strike tools.

The leaders condemned Russia’s extensive drone and missile campaigns and urged Vladimir Putin to accept an immediate and total ceasefire based on the current contact line to begin negotiations. Support efforts will continue at the G7 summit in Evian on June 15, with a focus on securing more economic sanctions and increased military pledges at the July Nato summit.

Following the departure of Macron and Merz, Starmer and Zelenskyy continued their discussions for another 30 minutes. This meeting of the E3 nations followed a period of increased hostilities and Putin’s rejection of Zelenskyy’s proposal for direct talks. Currently, the UK and France are heading a "coalition of the willing" to establish security guarantees for Ukraine.

Prior to the talks, Zelenskyy told Sky News that Ukraine would not "silently die," asserting that the country would grow stronger daily. He emphasized that the discussions centered on European security and air defense. Zelenskyy, who is scheduled to meet King Charles on Monday, thanked the UK and other allies via social media for their role in protecting lives and pressuring Russia.

The meeting occurred after Ukrainian drones hit a naval port and an oil terminal in St Petersburg, causing significant smoke just before the city's international economic forum. During that event on Friday, Putin dismissed Zelenskyy's open letter proposing face-to-face discussions, stating that his war objectives remain unchanged and that peace negotiations are currently pointless.
