Ukraine’s Armed Forces Now Use 60% Domestically Produced Weapons, Says Zelenskyy
Nearly 60% of weapons deployed by Ukraine’s military are now manufactured within the country, surpassing a target set by President Volodymyr Zelenskyy two months ago. "Over the course of this conflict, Ukraine has reached a point where almost 60% of the weapons in the hands of our soldiers are Ukrainian-made," Zelenskyy stated in his nightly video message on Saturday. "These weapons are highly effective, incorporating advanced capabilities." He also highlighted a cooperative effort to facilitate weapons production in Denmark. In July, the president urged his reconfigured government to expand domestic arms production beyond 50%, exceeding levels seen since Ukraine gained independence in 1991.
Ukraine has prioritized the development of drones and air defense systems to counter repeated Russian missile and drone assaults on its cities. Reports from the Pokrovsk sector highlight the increasing reliance on drones, with models used for reconnaissance, rescue operations, interception, and attacks reshaping battlefield dynamics.
Kyiv Targeted in Overnight Drone Strike
An overnight drone attack on Kyiv resulted in falling debris from downed drones igniting a fire on the roof of a 16-story apartment building, the city’s mayor reported on Sunday. "Emergency responders are en route," Vitali Klitschko announced on Telegram. Witnesses reported hearing multiple explosions, likely from active air defense systems.
Meanwhile, Russian shelling in Ukraine's northeastern Sumy region killed one person and injured several others, local officials confirmed on Saturday. "Following an enemy strike near Putyvyl, one fatality has been reported, with multiple injuries, including a nine-year-old child," said regional governor Oleg Grygorov on Telegram. In the southeast, a drone attack in Zaporizhzhia wounded at least 15 people, four of whom required hospitalization, according to regional official Ivan Fedorov. The area remains partially under Russian control.
Russian Oil Refinery Targeted in Drone Attack
A Ukrainian drone strike triggered a blaze at the Ilsky oil refinery in Russia’s Krasnodar region on Sunday, though it was swiftly contained. "A processing unit caught fire, but the flames, spanning several square meters, were rapidly extinguished," regional authorities reported on Telegram. "No casualties occurred. Emergency crews are on site, and refinery workers were safely evacuated."
Polish Military Activates Air Defense Measures
Polish and allied aircraft were scrambled early Sunday to monitor Polish airspace after Russian strikes targeted western Ukraine near the Polish border, the country’s armed forces command confirmed. "Allied and Polish aircraft are operational, while ground-based air defense and radar systems remain on high alert," the statement read.
