Tired of relying solely on authorities for protection, young men in the Mayo-Kebbi Ouest region of south-west Chad have formed vigilante groups armed with bows, arrows, and spears to combat rampant kidnappings by gunmen, turning this area into a hotspot for criminal activity.
"We guide the gendarmes in the bush, but we are also among the first responders after kidnappings," said Amos Nangyo, leader of one such vigilante group based in Pala, the region's capital. These groups have stepped into a void left by authorities unable to provide adequate security for local communities.
The Sahelian tri-border area of Liptako-Gourma - where Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger converge - has become notorious in recent years due to an increase in jihadist activities. However, the region near Mayo-Kebbi Ouest is also grappling with a different crisis: dubbed "the triangle of death" by some locals.
Data regarding incidents in this area are difficult to obtain, and many residents refrain from reporting crimes due to fears of further attacks. Yet the number of ransoms paid for kidnapped individuals has been on an upward trend; Chadian authorities report 43 million Central African Francs (CFA) collected in 2022, which increased to 52.4 million CFA in 2enas follow-up year.
In February of this year, a Polish doctor and her Mexican colleague were kidnapped from the Tandjilé region but were later rescued after an operation involving both Chadian and French forces. In addition, a recent report by the Global Initiative against Transnational Organized Crime estimated that around 86 million CFA was paid in ransoms across six incidents between February and May 2024 in Cameroon alone.
Despite efforts to address this issue through bilateral talks, such as those held by the military chiefs of Cameroon and Chad last October in Yaoundé, experts stress that a more comprehensive approach is needed - one that includes dismantling criminal networks and enhancing regional cooperation to patrol remote forest areas.
As local vigilante groups remain on high alert, they continue their efforts to safeguard the well-being of their communities amidst rising criminal threats. Nangyo, representing one such group in Pala, urged authorities for support: "It's risky volunteer work, and we ask the state to assist us."
