Some white Afrikaner South Africans find Donald Trump’s offer of refugee status to be welcome news amidst societal issues within the country itself. Meanwhile, others perceive it as causing anger and frustration due to being misconstrued in a narrative implying ongoing racial victimhood even after apartheid ended 31 years prior for their community's minority rule.
In February of this year, President Trump issued an executive order recognizing Afrikaners – who account for roughly 4% or about two million individuals within South Africa’s population – as victims facing racial discrimination unjustly and consequently initiated a refugee program specifically targeting white citizens. The inaugural group arrived in May, marking the start of this controversial move.
Afrikaners are descendants primarily from Dutch settlers along with French Huguenot immigrants who settled South Africa at around 17th century's closure and enforced apartheid starting as early as 1948 – a period marked by severe racial repression against the black majority while maintaining prosperity for white citizens.
Though legacies of economic disparities persist in present-day South Africa, with wealth accumulation often skewed along racial lines according to an article featured in Review of Political Economy; still, some argue that these issues have been exacerbated by the recent developments around Trump's refugee order.
The image or idea of white people being relocated while simultaneously blocking asylum seekers from war-affected regions has sparked mixed sentiments among South Africans spanning across races, further intensifying these preexisting societal divisions and causing discomfort to progressive Afrikaner communities.
Accordingly, Lindie Koorts—a history professor at the University of Pretoria – cited a commonly used phrase "Onze is die almal nie so neem," an expression employed by some as efforts towards unity and reconciliation among diverse South African factions without denying their Afrikaner or national identities, despite it becoming pejorative slang amongst conservatives.
The Solidarity Movement—a coalition comprising a labor union along with the activist group AfriForum — have been advocating for assistance from Trump since his initial presidential term to assist Afrikaners in remaining within their home country, arguing that there is an imminent threat towards cultural survival. They contend recent educational legislation would curtail opportunities for learning through the medium of Afrikaans language – a claim disputed by the ruling African National Congress party among others who believe such restrictions are not as severe or wide-reaching in reality, and that these fears tend to overstate cultural erosion.
While there's no comprehensive data available on Afrikaners’ political inclinations, it is known however the Freedom Front Plus party—a group often associated with representing conservative perspectives of Afrikaner interests – garnered approximately 456,000 votes during last year’s national elections.
Emile Myburgh — a lawyer whose youthful years were spent under apartheid when many believed their community was selected by divine will—recalled overhearing remarks about how those who rule at South Africa's extremity govern the whole world; thus, instilling in him feelings of supremacy and specialness.
However as an outrightly non-religious individual nowadays, he perceives himself somewhat alienated from his once religious community setting despite attending cultural events like Afrikaans book launches where culture is celebrated among their circles—thus indicating continued recognition of Afrikaner's rich heritage.
