Intelligence services have thwarted an alleged Russian plot targeting the leader of Germany's major defense company, which appears to be a form of retaliation for providing significant military support to Ukraine.
The scheme involved attempting to end the life of Armin Papperger, chief executive at Rheinmetall, amidst several other such plans against arms industry figures in Europe backing Ukraine's conflict. Unnamed US and Western officials disclosed this information on Thursday.
Reports suggest that these attempts were at a significant stage among various Russian strategies to eliminate defense personnel in European countries supporting Ukraine's military efforts, according to intelligence reports.
Upon receiving word of the plans through channels with American authorities, Germany took precautions and heightened security measures for Papperger and Rheinmetall.
Rheinmetall declined to comment but issued a statement saying that "appropriate measures are always taken" in coordination with security officials when necessary.
While responses from German authorities on this matter were not immediately available, the US has reportedly alerted Berlin regarding these threats.
As one of the leading global arms manufacturers specializing in artillery and vehicles, Rheinmetall significantly increased production following Russia's invasion of Ukraine last year.
In February, they announced a plan to establish an ammunition factory within Ukraine for vehicle repair services.
Amidst escalating tensions, there have been visible security measures around Papperger including police presence at Rheinmetall's headquarters in Düsseldorf and personal protection by local law enforcement officials.
Rheinmetall has played a significant role since the invasion of Ukraine, supplying military equipment to Kyiv while also facing criticism from Moscow for their actions. The Ukrainian forces utilize various Rheinmetall products like tanks and infantry vehicles, alongside artillery ammunition provided by the company.
The disclosure of these plots comes as part of a broader pattern believed to be Russia's attempt to hinder Ukraine’s military support through covert operations known collectively as "shadow war." Reports include acts from arson and vandalism, alongside attempts at sabotage that have had severe repercussions.
Nato officials highlighted the seriousness of these activities in a recent conference held in Washington.
German foreign minister Baerbock addressed this issue during the Nato summit, describing Russia's actions as part of an all-encompassing strategy that includes not only direct attacks but also cyber operations and infrastructure disruptions.
