Trade Official Expresses Trust in Deputy Prime Minister’s Integrity
Trade official Douglas Alexander voiced confidence in Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner, stating she entered politics with genuine intentions.
When questioned about his trust in Rayner, Alexander responded during a radio interview:
"I believe in a society where individuals like Angela Rayner, given her background and challenges she’s overcome, can achieve prominent leadership roles. Full disclosure—I hold great respect for her. While our paths differ, her perseverance speaks volumes. Without a doubt, she is committed for the right reasons."
Alexander emphasized that a thorough review would be conducted regarding the ongoing inquiry into Rayner’s financial matters but avoided discussing potential outcomes.
*"People naturally expect fair and meticulous procedures in such situations. The investigator, Sir Laurie Magnus, is known for thorough yet efficient work. Ultimately, it falls to the prime minister to assess the findings,"* he stated.
He declined to comment on specific details, noting that Magnus was best placed to address such inquiries.
Later, in a televised discussion, Alexander acknowledged public impatience over the prolonged investigation but stressed the importance of due process.
"The true measure lies in how institutions handle such matters. We have an independent office overseeing ministerial conduct, and its conclusion will reach the prime minister’s desk. Of course, prolonged scrutiny is frustrating, but fairness must prevail. If reports of an expedited resolution are accurate, it would benefit everyone involved."
Regarding the prime minister’s cautious remarks on whether Rayner would face consequences if violations were found, Alexander described the approach as measured.
"His responses reflected careful consideration of the situation. That’s the responsible stance," he noted.
