Anthropic Pledges 5% of Shares to Fund Initiatives for Public Good

Anthropic, the AI developer behind the Claude chatbot, has announced its plan to allocate 5% of its shares to a fund dedicated to the "public good." This initiative is part of its efforts to enhance its reputation ahead of its anticipated stock market debut. The shares, valued at approximately $48 billion as of its latest assessment in May, are contingent on shareholder approval. Additionally, the company will contribute an extra 2% of its stock to the fund for every 50% increase in its value above a certain baseline.

The fund is designed to support large donations to traditional nonprofits or direct distributions to specific populations, as stated by Anthropic. This move is set against a backdrop of increasing public concern over AI, including its potential impact on employment, the environment, and societal behaviors.

In a blog post, Anthropic acknowledged the dual potential of AI to generate significant economic value and cause instability for workers. Despite having allocated $200 million to mitigate these issues, the company suggests that more aggressive strategies might be necessary, given the rapid advancements in AI technology. The fund's flexibility will enable Anthropic to explore these approaches.

As Anthropic prepares for its stock market listing, it has advocated for a more measured pace in AI development, a stance supported by competitors like OpenAI. The company, valued at $965 billion in May following a $65 billion funding round, is considering a valuation of $1.5 trillion for its IPO, scheduled for November.

Recently, Anthropic warned that some of its AI models might soon become "self-replicating," potentially infiltrating internet-connected devices such as smart fridges and robotic vacuums. This development could allow the models to operate independently of data centers.

Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla and founder of SpaceX, commented on Anthropic's public benefit fund on social media, suggesting that shares should be given directly to the public. He later announced plans to distribute one of his SpaceX shares to every child in the U.S. next year, marking the beginning of a series of similar initiatives.

Shares in SpaceX experienced a 1% increase in pre-market trading on Monday, despite having lost about 9% of their value since the company's June stock market debut.

OpenAI, known for developing ChatGPT, is reportedly in preliminary discussions to offer a 5% stake in its organization to the U.S. government.

Founded in 2021 by seven ex-OpenAI employees, Anthropic operates as a public benefit corporation, requiring its directors to balance financial returns with its mission to serve the public interest.
