Uber has initiated a trial of autonomous vehicles in Manchester as part of its efforts to introduce robotaxi services in various UK cities. The first self-driving cars, developed using technology from partner firms Pony and Verne, are in operation. This collaboration previously led to Europe's inaugural autonomous taxi service in Zagreb, Croatia. Uber expressed enthusiasm about making this technology accessible to more people across the UK.
Verne announced on social media that autonomous vehicle testing had begun in Manchester, while Pony mentioned plans to deploy robotaxis in the city, with ongoing testing efforts. These tests involve mapping Manchester's streets with a safety driver present but no passengers.
Last month, limited passenger services commenced in London, adhering to Transport for London’s licensing rules, with safety drivers in the front seats of vehicles provided by Wayve. However, the future of these services remains uncertain. Opposition from Uber drivers, their unions, and London politicians is growing due to concerns about job losses. The GMB and ADCU unions have voiced concerns over potential job losses and have called for support for affected drivers.
A recent report from London's transport committee urged the government to devolve authority over autonomous taxi services, citing uncertainty about the benefits of autonomous vehicles, potential impacts on public transport and congestion, and concerns about accessibility for disabled passengers.
No official application to launch passenger services in Manchester has been made yet. The vehicles operate under a government license through the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) and the Department for Transport.
A spokesperson for Transport for Greater Manchester emphasized the importance of safety, stating that new technologies must be introduced responsibly and with consideration for residents. Although no applications have been submitted for driverless taxis in Greater Manchester, the authority is aware of potential interest from companies. Safety remains a top priority, with assurances needed that no vehicles will pose risks to residents.
Uber anticipates offering robotaxi trips in up to 15 cities globally by the end of 2026, primarily in the US and the Middle East.
