Friday morning found Manuel Mesa, who was playing an essential yet often overlooked role in Spain's preparations for Sunday's Euro 2024 final, maintaining a level-headed and philosophical outlook.
“I want Spain to win,” he said as he delivered barrels of Madrid's most popular beer to the bustling bars and restaurants in the capital's Plaza Mayor.
“But ultimately, the best team should emerge victorious. Regardless of the outcome, a considerable amount of celebratory drinking will follow," Mesa added with a smile.
Spain may be considered favorites for victory, but both Mesa and his fellow countrymen approached the situation with cautious optimism. Despite possessing talents like Nico Williams and rising star Lamine Yamal, Spain also boasts promising prospects such as Jude Bellingham.
The nation's manager, Luis de la Fuente, remained composed. “I am at peace," he stated to ABC on Friday. "Reaching the final is a remarkable achievement for us all. While victory remains our primary goal, we are simply grateful for this opportunity."
As Spain gears up for another potential Euro triumph, beers remain chilled and giant screens have been set up in squares across the country, albeit tempered by the knowledge that their path to glory wasn't guaranteed four weeks prior.
“Spain’s hopes are significantly higher than they were at the start of the tournament," noted Miguel Ángel Lara, a journalist for Marca sports paper. "Many initially doubted Spain and expected them to fail prematurely. However, their determination has impressed many."
As highlighted by Lara, memories of Spain's disheartening 2-0 defeat against Scotland during the qualifiers in March of last year have been overshadowed by Lamine Yamal’s impressive performance and Nico Williams.
Yamal, whose goal in the recent matchup with France propelled Spain into the final, has allowed his team to move past comparisons to their previous glorious era and embrace a new style of play.
“Spain's main challenge lies within constantly trying to recreate its successful 2008-2ayer glory days," Lara explained. "Yet that unique generation is no longer the standard by which they measure themselves today."
Lara, currently in Germany covering the final, spoke of his family back home during a phone call and expressed their overwhelming excitement for Spain’s performance: “It's madness,” he said. “My nephews are obsessed with Lamine, Nico Williams, Cucurella, all these names.”
However, such fervor is not solely exclusive to the Spanish people; England has also displayed a similar level of enthusiasm throughout their tournament journey. María Ramírez, covering for ElDiario.es in the UK, shared her perspective on both teams' progress and its impact amidst societal challenges: “The hope we witness from England’s advancement is reminiscent of that period following Spain's economic downturn," she noted. "It offers a small comfort during troubling times."
