The archbishop of Wales has announced his retirement following revelations at Bangor Cathedral involving excessive alcohol consumption, casual relationships, harsh interactions among staff and volunteers, improper language use, and questionable banter.
Andy John made this announcement on Friday evening after growing calls for him to step down intensified over time due to these issues becoming more widely known. He stated his immediate withdrawal as the archbishop of Wales would take place today while also confirming that he planned to retire from his position as bishop of Bangor by August 31st.
Neither John's statement nor communications issued by other senior members within Church in Wales explicitly addressed these ongoing issues or referred directly towards them, despite the backdrop against which they occurred being a source for growing public unease and demands for accountability from church leadership.
Previously this week, Andy John had voiced regret about “the situation” with an unreserved apology stating he acknowledged his failure in leading effectively: "I take full responsibility without offering any excuses or justifications," stated the bishop. He expressed remorse and asked for forgiveness on a personal level.
The call intensified earlier this week, advocating not only John's retirement but also an independent investigation into Bangor Cathedral’s culture - including actions by clergy members, staffers, volunteers, potential sexual boundary violations, financial mismanagement and negative working conditions in the cathedral setting.
Following a review conducted through ThirtyOne: Eight —a Christian safeguarding agency— reports emerged on heavy drinking culture within Bangor Cathedral along with instances of crossing professional boundaries leading to casual relationships; crude language, bullying and unpleasant communication among individuals. Homophobic remarks were also mentioned in these accounts as well as a generally discontented atmosphere at the cathedral site.
Insights shared by Tim Wyatt—the author behind The Critical Friend newsletter about Church happenings– confirmed that there was indeed much room for improvement, suggesting an environment completely misaligned with what should be expected from such places of spiritual refuge and worship: "There’s a lot to fix," he summarised.
Over the past year-and-a half around six serious incident reports have been filed pertaining mainly to safeguarding issues (with four directly related), alongside concerns about financial matters, as disclosed in correspondences with authorities involved such as Charity Commission and Trustees of Bangor Cathedral itself.
Issues included improper expenditure on interior refurbishments at the cathedral totaling over £400k without adequate input from relevant stakeholders, along with spending close to a quarter-million pounds (£20K) for trips undertaken by senior staff members.
The Charity Commission indicated that it has now initiated regulatory action in light of these various issues raised about the Cathedral and Diocese affairs as they were brought directly before them through concerned parties, further stating: "We have opened a case to assess multiple concerns pertaining to Bangor cathedral...we are examining this with charity trustees regarding next steps." They emphasised that if evidence of misconduct is found in their investigation—as part of its regulatory duties and powers usage framework they assured strong action.
