In France, voting commenced amidst what is being hailed as the most significant election of modern times for the national assembly. The far-right National Rally (RN), led by Marine Le Pen, together with its affiliates, may become a dominant force in the new parliament following a day of no political activity.
The electoral process began at 8am local time on Sunday across mainland France after a pause in activities. Pollsters are expected to share projections for seats once polling stations in major cities close at 8pm. Recent trends suggest the RN's representation may decrease from previous predictions as candidates opted out of contests that could dilute anti-far-right support.
The "republican front" is predicted to thwart the RN and its partners from securing a majority in parliament, with recent Ipsos research indicating an estimated 175 to 205 seats for the RN and its allies among the 577-seat assembly. Despite this increase compared to the former parliament's count of 88 deputies, it would still represent a significant presence in the new legislature.
On the other hand, The New Popular Front (NFP), an alliance between left-wing parties led by Jean-Luc Mélenchon and including Unbowed France (LFI), is expected to claim between 145 and 175 seats, possibly positioning itself as a substantial second force.
