Joe Biden has announced Nato countries will supply Ukraine with five additional strategic air defense units as leaders convened in Washington where it was anticipated that a declaration would affirm Ukraine's path towards NATO membership as "irreversible."
This promise of arms deliveries, including anti-air defenses sought after by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy, coincided with the tragic strike on a pediatric cancer hospital and civilian targets in Ukraine earlier that day. Biden referred to this as "a horrific reminder" of Russia's brutality.
“All told, Ukraine will receive hundreds more interceptors over the coming year, bolstering their defenses against Russian missiles and protecting Ukrainian cities on the front lines,” said Biden during his speech at the summit.
The headline address represented a crucial stride towards convincing international leaders of President Biden's capability to lead NATO and also served as an important test for him amidst political turbulence following the contentious debate against Donald Trump.
In resolute tones, he declared: “Before this conflict, Putin believed that NATO would falter. Now, it stands stronger than ever in its history. Before this war began, Ukraine was a free country and remains so today; despite Russia's actions, the war will not change that.”
He reassured his audience saying, "Russia will not triumph, and we believe that Ukraine shall."
The decision to bolster Ukraine’s air defenses came following reports of consistent heavy bombardment from Russian forces. The US, Germany, and Romania have pledged additional sets of the Patriot air defense system with contributions from the Netherlands, while Italy's Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni approved donating a similar system developed by Italian-French collaboration known as SAMP/T.
“These five strategic air defense systems will aid in safeguarding Ukrainian cities and civilians alike,” stated an official communique from the leaders of these countries, mentioning ongoing coordination with Ukraine's government for swift implementation. "Additional announcements regarding further strategic air defense systems are expected this year."
In addition to the medium-range Patriot and SAMP/T systems, the US and its allies committed to delivering several tactical defensive measures including NASAMS from a European consortium, Hawk missiles from the U.S., Iris systems from a European partnership, and German Gepard missiles.
The new British Prime Minister, Keir Starmer, along with Ukrainian President Zelenskiy, were among those arriving in Washington amid warnings of an increase in Russian missile strikes on Ukraine; this followed the tragic bombing that claimed 38 lives last Monday. Diplomats suggested a communique was likely to state that Ukraine's path towards NATO is "irreversible," shifting control over military aid and training for Ukraine under Nato supervision.
However, progress on Ukraine’s integration with NATO in Washington was unlikely due to opposition from key members such as the U.S., Hungary, Germany, and Italy who fear escalated conflict if Ukraine joined during Russia's warfare. The European alliance continues to support Ukraine through additional aid packages underlining their commitment towards freedom and democracy.
NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg emphasized the importance of victory in Ukraine for global security, stating that failure would embolden other authoritarian regimes like China, North Korea, and Iran. The conflict's outcome is set to shape international relations for years to come.
