The executive director of Southall Black Sisters, Selma Taha, alongside two friends, expressed relief and disappointment after an assault case against them dissolved. They faced accusations following an alleged attack on a woman in King’s Cross underground station amid claims they were subject to racism.
Selma, 52, along with Divina Riggon, 42, and Danae Thomas, 53, had initially been charged for the assault incident. However, due to newly presented evidence suggesting a lack of conviction likelihood, charges against them were dropped on Wednesday.
Selma emphasized that they should not have faced prosecution and highlighted issues with how black women are treated within the legal system: "What we know from our work is this tends to happen." The three had also been separately charged for harassment, which too was later dropped.
Taha shared her personal experience of abuse on a tube train in September last year and criticized the handling of justice by stating that it appeared no accountability was given to the complainant who received only a caution at the time. She described the past 10 months as reaffirming distrust towards the legal system's fairness, particularly for black women.
Rajiv Menon KC, representing Taha and Thomas, echoed their sentiments: "This decision should have been made long ago; this type of prosecution has no place in today’s society." He stressed that such incidents were unacceptable even years after similar occurrences were common.
A spokespner for the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) mentioned their responsibility to review cases continuously, ultimately leading to the dismissal of charges due to insufficient prospects for a conviction based on newly acquired information.
