Border clashes escalate as Thailand's acting PM warns of potential war with Cambodia

Thai Acting PM Warns Border Clashes with Cambodia Could Escalate

Thailand’s acting prime minister cautioned that ongoing cross-border clashes with Cambodia might escalate into a larger conflict after a second day of exchanges.

Phumtham Wechayachai, quoted by AFP, stated in Bangkok:

"If the situation worsens, it could develop into war, though for now it remains limited to clashes."

He added that the hostilities have disrupted civilian lives and affirmed the government’s commitment to defending national sovereignty.

### Thailand Open to Diplomacy as Ceasefire Calls Grow

Thailand’s foreign ministry indicated willingness to engage in talks with Cambodia to resolve the border tensions.

“We are ready if Cambodia wants to settle this through diplomatic channels, bilaterally or with Malaysia’s mediation. So far, we have received no response,” spokesperson Nikorndej Balankura told AFP.

He noted signs that the clashes were subsiding. Malaysia, currently leading the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), has urged a ceasefire.

The U.S. called for an immediate end to the conflict, while France—Cambodia’s former colonial ruler—also pressed for de-escalation. The European Union and China, a key Cambodian ally, voiced concerns and urged dialogue.

### Cambodia Accuses Thailand of Violating International Law

Cambodia’s defense ministry accused Thailand of committing acts that violate war conventions, alleging airstrikes and the use of banned cluster munitions across seven locations.

Lieutenant General Maly Socheata, cited in local media, claimed Thai forces deployed F-16 jets and heavy weaponry starting Thursday morning.

*“These attacks breach humanitarian norms and international law, including the ban on cluster munitions,”* Maly said. Cambodian forces reportedly repelled further Thai advances near disputed border temples.

The Thai military has not yet responded.

### Travel Advisory Issued Amid Border Unrest
