Keir Starmer's choice to accept clothing and eyewear gifts has been labeled excessive by former prime minister Boris Johnson.
Johnson criticized his Labour successor’s actions during a discussion on LBC, where he defended the government's approach of contracting personal protective equipment (PPE) supplies amidst Covid-19 from newcomers with connections to officials in high places.
Reflecting upon these remarks while promoting his autobiography "Unleashed," Johnson questioned why Starmer seemed willing to receive such generous offers when he already had a government income, highlighting the perception of greed and potential corruption involved. He also expressed confusion over Starmer's continued use despite vision issues that might necessitate glasses.
Additionally, Boris Johnson has been known for receiving contributions towards his personal expenses - notable donations included funding from business magnate Anthony Bamford amounting to £23,853 aimed at various aspects of a wedding event in 2022 and luxury food items contributed by Carole Brownlow. There was also criticism for an undisclosed contribution related to the renovation costs of his residence on Downing Street after failing proper declaration as per Electoral Commission standards resulted in fines against him and Tory party.
In a further interview, Johnson acknowledged that although their rush during Covid-19 demanded quick procurement for necessary protective equipment (PPE), some contracts might have been questionable due to the urgency of circumstances: "Our country was desperate for this safety gear as fast as possible." He defended hasty decisions made in sourcing these supplies, despite potential concerns regarding their quality or origin.
