Brazil's security agency faced scrutiny for allegedly operating beyond its legal boundaries during Jair Bolsonaro's leadership to surveil key political figures. Federal police have accused individuals within this organization, including former intelligence chief Alexandre Ramagem, of engaging in unauthorized monitoring activities targeting politicians and officials across various parties, with impact reaching journalists and environmental authorities.
The investigation uncovered claims that during Bolsonaro's tenure (2019-2022), the Agência Brasileira de Inteligência was purportedly misused to monitor those opposed to his administration. Reports indicate arrests made recently are part of an ongoing probe into these allegations, involving numerous personalities from diverse political backgrounds.
Among the named individuals in police documents were Arthur Lira and Rodrigo Maia, prominent politicians; Senator Randolfe Rodrigues, a key figure supporting the current left-wing government led by Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva; João Doria, once governor of São Paulo state; four Supreme Court justices; journalists Vera Magalhães and Mônica Bergamo; and Ibama officials Hugo Loss and Roberto Cabral.
The police document alleges the formation of an unauthorized intelligence unit under Ramagem's direction, which reportedly utilized covert methods to gather information on perceived opposition figures or institutions. The gathered data was purportedly used for creating misleading online content with the intent of damaging reputations and undermining democratic processes.
WhatsApp messages from arrested suspects depicted a sense of urgency within this clandestine group, suggesting an aggressive approach towards their targets. Confrontational exchanges also emerged between members and military personnel, hinting at the extent to FFs reach into broader political concerns, including criticisms of Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes' role in resisting efforts to dismantle democratic systems.
Targeted individuals expressed their indignation upon hearing these allegations. Congressional vice-president Randolfe Rodrigues condemned the government's actions as indicative of a totalitarian regime, while Senator Renan Calheiros lamented the abuse of power by security forces employing methods resembling those used in past dictatorships.
