Northampton’s Unbeaten Streak Ends in Heavy Defeat Against Bristol
Northampton’s unbeaten run this season concluded abruptly as they were overwhelmed 46-12 by a dominant Bristol side at Ashton Gate. The visitors suffered an early setback when Edoardo Todaro was sent off in the opening minute, and Bristol capitalized emphatically, crossing for six tries.
Scrum-half Kieran Marmion touched down twice, with Tom Jordan, Kalaveti Ravouvou, Aidan Boshoff, and Luka Ivanishvili also scoring. Sam Worsley contributed 16 points, slotting five conversions and two penalties. Northampton’s responses came via JJ van der Mescht and Tom Litchfield, with Fin Smith adding one conversion.
The match began disastrously for Saints when Todaro, recently capped by Italy, received a red card for a reckless tackle on Worsley in midair—a clear-cut decision by officials. Bristol swiftly exploited their numerical advantage, with Marmion darting over from a quick-tap penalty.
The hosts added a second try when Jordan ran a sharp line to collect James Williams’ pass and stroll over. Bristol then produced their finest score of the afternoon, confounding Northampton’s defense with fluid passing moves. Harry Thacker surged down the right flank before being halted, allowing Marmion to scoop up the ball and dot down his second.
Bristol lost wing Jack Bates to injury, replaced by Louis Rees-Zammit, but momentum stayed firmly with the hosts. A powerful hit by Benhard Janse van Rensburg dislodged the ball from Smith, enabling Ravouvou to gather and sprint 45 meters unchallenged. Northampton’s dismal first half concluded with Boshoff collecting Worsley’s precise pass to extend the lead to 35-0 at halftime.
Six minutes after the restart, Van der Mescht powered over for Northampton’s first try following sustained pressure. Worsley replied with a penalty, bolstering Bristol’s lead. Though more competitive after the break, Saints could only add one more score—Litchfield outpacing defenders to gather George Furbank’s tactical kick. Worsley struck another penalty before Ivanishvili capped Bristol’s commanding display with a driving lineout finish.
Gloucester Secure First Premiership Win
Gloucester’s head coach George Skivington praised centre Seb Atkinson’s influence in their 26-15 victory over Harlequins, marking their maiden Premiership win this season. Atkinson, who shone on England’s Argentina tour, had been sidelined since October with knee and hip injuries but returned seamlessly.
“Seb’s energy and presence were vital. He’s a cornerstone player—resilient, composed, and a natural leader,” Skivington remarked. “Having him back transforms our dynamic.”
