A life raft carrying the remains of a couple who disappeared during their Atlantic crossing was discovered on a remote Canadian island almost six weeks ago. The bodies belong to Sarah Packwood, 54, from Britain, and her husband Brett Clibbery, 70, both Canadian nationals.
The pair vanished after leaving Nova Scotia in early June aboard their eco-friendly yacht Theros. On July 12th, the life raft washed ashore on Sable Island – a notorious stretch of the Atlantic known for numerous shipwrecks since 1583.
Theros, which was equipped with sustainable technology like solar panels and an electric engine from a car, set out in early June bound for the Azores, an archipelago belonging to Portugal. However, their journey took a tragic turn as they were spotted southwest of Sable Island on June 13th before being unaccounted for since then.
The couple had previously met by chance at a London bus stop in 2015 and tied the knot aboard Theros in 2016, moving to Canada shortly afterward. They shared an interest in sailing and environmental conservation, with their most recent voyage being dubbed as "Green Odyssey".
Police are conducting a comprehensive investigation into the circumstances surrounding the couple's disappearance and eventual discovery on Sable Island. One theory suggests that Theros may have collided with an unnoticed cargo ship during their journey across the Atlantic, leading to catastrophic consequences for the sailors aboard.
The tragic events unfolded after numerous previous voyages undertaken by Packwood and Clibbery, including a transatlantic crossing halted due to severe storms in 2019. Despite their passion for adventure and commitment to eco-friendly travel, the couple's final journey ended abruptly on Sable Island amidst its treacherous waters.
