Tropical Storm Beryl has once again gained strength after traversing the Caribbean as an initial hurricane before making landfall on the Yucatán peninsula. Now, it is projected to reach U.S. shores along the Texas coast for a second time in its history as a significant storm system.
Currently located about 495 miles (797km) south-east of Corpus Christi, Texas, Beryl holds the distinction of being one of the earliest recorded Category 5 hurricanes on record. The forecast suggests that by Saturday evening and continuing into Sunday night, it will shift its trajectory northwestwards before proceeding further in a northerly direction.
Beryl maintains sustained wind speeds near 60mph with tropical-storm-force gusts extending outward up to 105 miles from the storm's core. Anticipations are that by its projected early Monday arrival, it will have regenerated into a Category 1 hurricane, yet advisories indicate residents should be prepared for potential conditions typical of a Category 2 hurricane.
Grenada and St Vincent experienced significant impact from Beryl as the storm reached these locations with considerable strength. Reports suggest that Union Island was almost entirely uninhabitable following extensive damage, leading to relocation efforts for displaced individuals seeking shelter and basic needs. Meanwhile, Mustique reported some superficial infrastructure damages but managed to maintain its core facilities.
The minimal inhabited island of Mayreau in St Vincent faced severe destruction with buildings demolished, trees uprooted, and homes flattened due to the storm's ferocity. The repercussions were described by a resident as chaotic and unprecedented.
After traversing south of Jamaica and intensifying again upon reaching Mexico's Yucatán peninsula, Beryl reduced its strength prior to moving over land in that region. President Andrés Manuel López Obrador urged residents to seek safety above ground level amid the impending storm conditions along Texas’ lower or middle coastal areas.
As Beryl prepares for another powerful impact on U.S. territory, it is expected to bring substantial rainfall and a possibility of tropical tornadoes near Houston in its wake.
