The European Union Parliament holds its tenth election, with 720 positions up for grabs across member nations. To hold a majority of these seats, candidates require at least 361 votes in favor – a feat expected to be challenging given the diversity of political groups involved.
Each nation within the EU is allocated Members of European Parliament (MEPs) based on its population size via degressive proportional representation; that means larger nations have more representatives than smaller ones, but all individuals are represented fairly. A minimum of six and a maximum of 96 MEPs can be assigned to any country.
Compared to previous elections, there's an increase in total seats available for election – this change demands careful consideration when analyzing the results. France, Spain, the Netherlands, as well as Poland, Belgium, Austria, Denmark, Finland, Slovakia, Ireland, Slovenia and Latvia have each gained one additional seat in their national representation within the European Parliament.
The number of seats won by political parties is calculated based on popular votes received, ensuring proportional representation across all countries. However, once these nation-level allocations are made, MEPs often join transnational groups that align with shared values and political ideologies – at present, seven such groups exist. A minimum threshold for membership in these groups requires the support of 23 MEPs from a quarter of EU nations.
Written by European Parliament sources, data is based on results up to June 7, 2024. Country groupings follow UN geographical classifications. Seat projections and allocations are labeled as "Estimate," "Projection," "Provisional", or "Final" depending on the stage of election process and verification from national authorities. While final seat numbers for each political party in a country can be confirmed once all votes are tallied, decisions about affiliation to specific transnational groups might take additional time post-election, making some initial figures provisional until such groupings are determined.
