On Thursday, Chinese media disclosed the shutdown of Shipping Help's tracking system, which assisted in monitoring cargo movement via satellite imagery. The service was temporarily unavailable as a result, with an alternative message indicating ongoing enhancements.
Shipping Help had enabled non-professionals and enterprises to track specific vehicles involved in logistics operations until now. However, following recent revelations about fuel tankers reused for carrying cooking oils without adequate cleansing between trips, the app's functionality was suspended.
Public concerns regarding potential contamination of food supplies with hazardous substances have escalated in China after this discovery. Officials assured a thorough investigation into any violations and subsequent penalties for offenders, amidst growing unease over the enforcement of health standards among consumers.
The initial report by Beijing News unveiled these concerns earlier this month, prompting independent efforts to trace the oil's distribution pathway. Connections were made between some tanker deliveries and factories owned by renowned brands like Jinlongyu, a prevalent soya bean oil provider in markets across China. The company claimed its trucks adhere to standards.
This incident has sparked debate over the government's approach towards controlling information circulation given their rigorous censorship policies. Suggestions arose that possibly restricting Shipping Help's tracking capability was aimed at downplaying the issue, though opinions varied widely.
"In today’s world, access to data holds great influence," remarked a Weibo commenter. "But when it comes to accountability and transparency, there is sometimes an overwhelming sense of powerlessness. I hope all 'system updates' are truly aimed at improving user experience rather than concealing any shortcomings."
