Norman Tebbit, Former Conservative Minister and Thatcher Ally, Dies at 94
Norman Tebbit, a former Conservative cabinet minister and staunch supporter of Margaret Thatcher, has passed away at the age of 94.
Tebbit served as an MP for the constituencies of Epping and Chingford for 22 years before being granted a life peerage as Lord Tebbit of Chingford. He stepped down from the House of Lords in 2022.
Over his extensive political career, he held key positions, including employment secretary, trade and industry secretary, chancellor of the duchy of Lancaster, and chair of the Conservative Party.
His son, William, confirmed his death in a statement: “At 11:15 p.m. on 7th July 2025, Lord Tebbit died peacefully at home aged 94. The family requests privacy at this time, and further details regarding funeral arrangements will be shared in due course.”
During his tenure as employment secretary, Tebbit was known for his tough stance on trade unions. As Conservative Party chair from 1985 to 1987, he played a significant role in securing Thatcher’s third general election victory.
Tebbit and his wife, Margaret, were severely affected by the 1984 Brighton bombing, which left her paralyzed from the neck down. Tebbit himself suffered serious injuries in the attack.
