A far-right Danish political figure, who has been linked with Qur'an burning incidents in Sweden, faces trial on charges related to these acts. Rasmus Paludan of Stram Kurs (Hard Line) becomes the first individual tried under Swedish law for such allegations.
He opted not to appear physically at Malmö district court where his hearing was scheduled due to safety concerns; instead, he participated via video link from an unnamed location in Sweden as proceedings commenced on Monday.
Paludan is facing three charges: two instances of incitement against a specific ethnic group and one case involving insult during events held across Swedish cities like Malmö, Landskrona, Linköping, Örebro over Easter weekend in 2022. In these gatherings he allegedly made provocative remarks targeting Arabs and Africans according to the prosecutor's claims.
The controversy surrounding this case escalated further during summer of 2023 when several protest events, including Qur’an burning demonstrations outside parliament buildings in Sweden led by Paludan sparked a national debate over Swedish freedom of expression laws and strained diplomatic relations with Muslim nations. Notably his act of setting the Qur'an ablaze at Turkey's embassy in Stockholm during January 2023 was considered significant, as it reportedly influenced Sweden’s decision on NATO membership pathway delay.
Law professor Vilhelm Persson from Lund University described this trial with Paludan carrying immense importance due to its status of being the first case linked directly to Qur'an burning in connection under Swedish law scrutiny, although he noted that a district court ruling does not set precedent and Supreme Court deliberation is necessary for legal grounding.
The main hearing initiated at Malmö District court on October 14 revolves around Paludan who has been charged with two counts of incitement against an ethnic group, alongside one count related to insult since the events transpired in April and September 2022 within his home town. Senior Prosecutor Adrien Combier-Hogg previously stated that there was ample justification for these charges which now awaits district court judgment process according to local laws, leaving room yet unresolved questions about potential legal precedents at this level of the trial system itself under Swedish jurisdiction in cases like Paludan's.
