In Colorado, four individuals who worked with poultry were diagnosed with the influenza virus commonly referred to as bird flu, according to health officials. This marks an additional case contributing to a total of nine within the United States since the initial human infection was reported in 2022 among a worker at the same location. Out of these instances, eight have occurred this year.
The symptoms experienced by those affected were mild and typical for influenza: reddened eyes, fever, chills, coughing, sore throat, and a runny nose. None required hospitalization, as reported by officials. The fifth individual displaying symptoms is currently undergoing testing; however, the results have not yet been released. These individuals had direct contact with infected birds during their work at a poultry farm in northeastern Colorado, according to state health representatives.
The H5N1 virus has been present since 2020, affecting various animals across numerous countries, including dogs, cats, skunks, bears, seals, and porpoises. Earlier this year, it was detected within U.S. livestock, with current reports noting its presence in cattle in several states. Despite the spread among animal populations, health officials maintain that the risk to the general population remains low as there has been no transmission between humans thus far. However, vigilance is maintained due to previous incidents where earlier strains of this virus have led to fatalities in human cases.
In response to these developments, a team from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) was dispatched to Colorado at the state's request to assist with the investigation. Earlier occurrences included dairy farm workers across Michigan, Texas, and Colorado this year. The influenza virus identified in these recent cases shares partial genetic similarity with previous U.S. instances, but additional analysis is being conducted to confirm its exact identity.
As of a report dated last Friday, the H5N1 strain has been confirmed within 152 dairy operations across 12 states, according to the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). Numerous commercial poultry populations in over 30 U.S. states have reported cases of various bird flu types or H5N1 influenza.
